Things aren't always as they appear…

New school. Cross-country move. Broken heart. If only these were Emma Guthrie's worst problems. Instead, she must battle a trio of enemies--human and spectral--who may or may not have joined forces against her and everyone she loves. All while pretending to be over Cooper Beaumont, her ex-boyfriend and true love, to shield him from her arch-nemesis's revenge.

Worse, when the fight escalates, Emma is tempted to use black magic, which will endanger her soul. As her enemies close in, join forces, and fight with new and dark magic she's never seen before, Emma must harness the power within her to fulfill an ancient prophecy, defeat a centuries-old evil, save her family, and reclaim the only boy she's ever loved.

My Review
Just about everyone has heard of magic. If you are from the South then chances are you have heard of hoodoo and voodoo. And if you are from the deep south you may even know someone you has claimed to have perform a spell or two.

As a kid, Southern superstitions were everyday practice. I still do some of them as it was so ingrained into me. For example, when you comb your hair there is usually a few strand in between the teeth of it. There are two things that was believed about why we did what we did to these strands. One. birds would get it, put it in their nest, and then your hair would fall out. Two, someone could put roots on you. So what did we do to prevent this? We burned the hair. Then there one that many men know that involves red sauce and blood. I won't go into it but if you heard of it then you know that the blood isn't from your finger and it's a special type of love spell. Figured it out. Yeah, some of these things are not so glamorous but anyway.

Illusion surprised me. I don't know what I expected but it was this. This is a great read. It is informative as if these people are really in the hoodoo world. It is exciting and keeps you are the edge of your seat. Pages keep turning as you are constantly wanting to know what happens next. So as you can guess this is a fast paced read.

These characters are unique and different from each other. You get emotional at times. When that daggers caught Miss Delia I was like damn. This is book 3 and since I have heard the first two books I was just getting to know this old root worker lady. Speaking of book 3, there are times when you know that there is a backstory that you don't know about but you do not have to read the first 2 in order to enjoy this read, so that's a plus.

Read this if you like books about magic that takes place in the present and in our same Earth world.
